Biodiversity of the Bering Sea (Research Paper)
The Bering Sea is located in the North Pacific Ocean. There are a lot of animals, for example, whales, killer whales, seals, walruses and sea lions, and so on, and many kinds of fish. The Bering Sea is one of the biggest marine ecosystems in the world. However, it has a lot of problems now. According to States News Service (2005), northern right whales have to move to the Bering Sea. They used to live in the Pacific Ocean, but the Bering Sea is better than the Pacific Ocean because there are a lot of foods. The northern right whale is one of the most endangered in the world. The NOAA, which is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, supposed the Bering Sea for northern right whales, because there is more food for them there than in the Pacific Ocean. And then, according to Space Daily (2006), the northern Bering Sea ecosystem is changing, because seawater’s temperature has become high, and seasonal ice cover is melting. The ice is broken and thin. In addition, the northern Bering Sea’s animals face crises because of the ecosystem’s change. Their food has become reduced.
Today our problem is global warming. The earth’s temperature is absolutely higher than before. Also, Bering seawater’s temperature is warming. We don’t realize these things, but animals and nature feel that. This problem is very important and dangerous in our lives. It affects everyone all over the world. The Bering Sea’s condition is changed by global warming. Many problems may occur. The ecosystem has broken. It affects animals, fish and human beings. In addition, I watched the movie, which is “The Day after Tomorrow.” This movie was about global warming. This movie predicts the future after global warming. Now is global warming, so the earth’s temperature is higher, but after that the earth becomes cold like the glacial period. The earth was in the glacial period at once several million years ago. This movie said that before the glacial period, the earth also was at a high temperature, so now it is at a high temperature. Someday the earth will have another glacial period. We have to avoid this situation. So, we should reduce seawater temperature, take care of marine animals and protect sea ice.
Firstly, we should stop raising seawater temperature. Seawater has become higher year after year. It is true. “In recent decades temperatures have risen by around 3 ℃ in the northernmost part of the Pacific and in the Bering Sea. The warming is driven by fast-rising air temperatures, loss of sea ice and the fact that shallow water over the wide continental shelf can heat up more quickly than the deeper ocean” (New Scientist, 2006, p. 20). Robert Lee Hotz (2006, p. 5) said, “Until recently, the northern Bering Sea was dominated by a vast subsurface pool of cold water at a temperature if 32 degrees Fahrenheit. During the last 12 years, near-freezing water temperatures along the Bering Sea floor have grown steadily warmer. By 2004, the surface water temperature had reached a high of 50 degrees.” And, the high temperature in the Bering Sea causes trouble in the ecology of the local wildlife (Connor, 2006). The North and South Pole’s ice is melting, because seawater and atmosphere temperature has become warmer. Seawater condition is changing very much. This is caused by global warming and the reason for this is greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere, and it causes warming (Space Daily, 2005). This gas is a very bad gas, because it holds the earth. The earth receives the sun’s heat, but it doesn’t escape from the earth because of greenhouse gas. Many experts predict the earth’s temperature will absolutely become higher than it is now.
We should reduce greenhouse gases, which are mostly CO2, freon and methane, and so on. These gases were created by human beings. A long time ago, we thought those gases were very good and convenient for our lives. Many tools used those gases. At that time, we didn’t know they were bad for the earth. Now, we know that, so we reduce the use of them. However, CO2 is emitted by our normal lives, for example, car, airplane or air conditioner, and so on. We don’t realize how much we emit CO2, but we emit a lot of CO2. The car is a very convenient vehicle for our life; however, it is very bad for the environment. It causes air pollution too. If you go to a nearby place, you should use a bicycle or public transportation, or walk. You must not use a car. In addition, air conditioners emit much CO2 too. But we can’t live in a cooler or warmer place. We always use air conditioner for our comfortable life. We are used to using them, so we can’t live without them. However, if we use air conditioners, the earth’s condition will become worse. If you feel cold, you should wear one more layer of cloting. You shouldn’t turn on an air conditioner or raise the air conditioner’s temperature. Nowadays, CO2 is a very big problem in all over the world.
Therefore Kyoto protocol decided on a definite number. Most advanced countries and some developing countries emit CO2. European Union (E.U.) has succeeded reducing CO2. It is a very good thing. Every country has to learn how to reduce CO2 from the E.U. However, the U.S. refused the Kyoto protocol. It is very stupid. CO2 is a problem all over the world. Every country has to reduce its CO2. If every country does that, CO2 can be reduced. The Japanese government tries to reduce CO2, so there are many advertisements about reducing CO2 in Japan. Many famous people appeared in commercial messages about global warming. Now the Japanese government is desperate, because we can’t be going to achieve an aim by this condition. The present condition is very bad because we can’t reduce CO2 the least. In addition, recently Japanese car companies make hybrid car which can reduce CO2. This is very good invention, but this kind of car is very expensive now. Normal people can’t buy it easily. And then, we can’t live without airplanes, but they emit, more CO2 than cars. I hope airplanes will become like hybrid cars. If this succeeds, much CO2 can be reduced.
Secondly, we should take care of marine life. A lot of life lives in the ocean. They are very important to the ocean, but the Bering Sea’s animals are in a very dangerous situation now. Seawater has been high and ice is melting, so many animals have lost their habitat. The Bering Sea’s ecosystems are changing, so many animals are faced with extinction. Walrus mothers breed their children on ice during summer and animals use ice to rest (Space Daily, 2006). In addition, “Gray whales, walruses and diving seabirds are being replaced by fish that are moving north as ice cover shrinks and waters warm” (Munro, 2006, p. 17). They live in a cool place, and they can’t live in a warm place. They have moved north. If fish move north, other animals, which eat fish, also move north. Every animal and fish will move north. Also New Scientist (2006 p. 20) said, “The absence of fish in its upper waters has given the northern Bering Sea one of the richest seabed ecosystems in the world. But as the water warms, fish are invading and the bottom-dwellers are retreating further north, followed by their predators, including gray whales, walruses and eider ducks.” And “Pacific gray whales were fleeing northward to feed in cooler currents, while pink salmon by the million swarmed into warmer waters the whales had abandoned” (Hotz, 2006, p. 5). However they have reached their limit. Finally, they will lose their habitat.
The NOAA protects animals. For example, they protect the northern right whale, which is one of the most endangered. The NOAA suggests a new living place for northern right whales, because they live in the Pacific Ocean, but this place’s condition is not good. They can’t live there safely. We also should protect animals and fish. They are very important for our life. Fish can clean the ocean. Nowadays, seawater is not clean. My hometown has sea too, but seawater is very dirty. I don’t want to swim there. Maybe fish and other animals think so. They can live in dirty seawater. They will die. If all animals die, seawater will become dirty more and more. Maybe it affects our life. For example, we can’t swim in the seas or eat fish. Most people like a beach. In summer, many people go to the beach. They enjoy marine activities. And then, we can’t eat fish. Japanese people like fish very much. Recently many Americans like sushi. I have often heard Americans say that they like sushi. If we can’t eat fish, it is a very terrible thing for many people. Fish have much good nutrition. We may come to have malnutrition, especially Japanese. And Japanese food culture will change very much. Japanese traditional food is almost all made from fish and shellfish. And, the Bering Sea’s fish are famous in the world. All over the world, there are many fishermen. They will lose their jobs. Their lives depend on fish, so the economy also has a problem. If many animals and fish die, it is a problem not only for the ocean. Accordingly, we should protect animals and fish, and pay more attention our actions toward the ocean.
I also have a problem because I like the ocean very much. I like fish, marine animals and marine sports very much. There is no sea here, so I’m very sad. I need the sea. In Japan, I often go to aquariums, but I want to watch fish and animals more closely. I want to swim with dolphins. I decided to get a scuba diving license. And now, I have it. When I did scuba diving for the first time in Japan, I was so surprised, because it was an amazing place. I thought fish were very cute, coral reefs were very beautiful and water was clear. I could spend a very good time. I like the sea more and more. I like a scuba diving, so if marine life dies, I’m very shocked. I can’t think about that, so I want to be a person who behaves well toward the ocean.
Finally, we should think about sea ice. Sea ice is very important for animals and us. If it melts animals lose their habitat. “As sea ice diminished, breeding grounds for seals were disrupted and populations plummeted. Polar bears started to drown. Walruses, accustomed to diving in the shallows to feed along the sea bottom, found themselves adrift on broken ice floes in waters 6500 feet deep. The animals starved” (Hotz, 2006, p. 5). A lot of animals have trouble. Walruses and seals search for cold water and good sea ice, but they can’t find if so they have to breed their pups in a warm place and on thin sea ice (Munro, 2006). If they lose their habitat, they will die. The food chain changes; for example, whales have eaten many fish until now. But they die; fish isn’t eaten by them, so fish is increased gradually. It is a big problem for all marine life. It is not a good cycle.
When I went to university in Japan, I took a class, which was environmental science. I studied about global warming. I watched the video about North and South Pole’s animals which are white bears and penguins. Before we watched the video, my teacher said, “Can you image about penguins and white bears. Our image is they live on sea ice, and they live in a clean place. But this video isn’t like that. Sea ice is melting, so there are soils. Their bodies have become dirty because of soils.” After that, we watched the video. It was very sad. Penguins and white bears live on ground. It is very strange. We have to put back their living place.
In addition, if sea ice melts, sea level will go up. Some islands and areas will disappear. For example, Tuvalu is very low land so much of the coast is flooded now. Tuvalu’s people have to move to other countries. It is a very sad story. If Japan disappears because of seawater, I must be sad. However, some of Japan’s areas are low too. Japanese worry about sea level too. Sea ice’s melting also relates to global warming. We have to reduce CO2.
In conclusion, we should stop the rising seawater, take care of animals and protect sea ice. Many people don’t know about the sea condition, so we should study it more and more. And these things relate to global warming. Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases and it is mostly CO2. If we protect the Bering Sea condition, at first we should reduce CO2. It is the most important thing. If we can reduce CO2, we may be able to save many animals and fish. Nature is very sensitive and it isn’t put back easily. We don’t have to destroy them any more. Now we can live on the earth. But if all nature isdestroyed, we can’t live here. It is very terrible. We don’t have any place except the earth. Protecting animals is connected to our lives. We should protect animals and nature.
